Women in Beverage

As we begin to wrap up the final days of Women’s History Month, it is important to remember that we are all stronger together, and that we can grow by uplifting and celebrating one another. As a woman-owned business, we love to support our fellow female founders, especially those within our community!

That being said, I’d like to take a moment to recognize a few pretty badass women who have been disrupting the drinking game; and by that, I mean that these women are making their mark on the alcoholic beverage industry, a game known to be male-dominated. Although women in c-suite roles in the food and beverage industry have risen, they only make up about 10 percent of these positions.

Sara Stender Delaney - Sarilla

Of course we have to highlight our very own Sara Delaney, who founded Sarilla, as well as our loose leaf Tîma Tea. Sarilla’s sparkling teas are all made with the same Rwandan tea leaves that are sourced for our Tîma Tea.

Although Sarilla doesn’t actually contain any alcohol, it serves as an alcohol alternative for drinkers to choose from, where we can help reduce alcohol-related sexual assault on college women. Sarilla can be found online and in-stores, and is in the works of being offered on tap in bars. You can find out more about Sarilla’s iFundWomen campaign here to help support this cause.

Sara has been able to network with many different women and business owners over the years, but two in particular that we’ve had the privilege to work with are Cristina Ackley and Debbie Ward, who both operate their own alcoholic beverage companies right here in Asheville, NC!

Cristina Hall Ackley - Ginger’s Revenge

Along with her husband, Cristina is the president and co-founder of local brewery, Ginger’s Revenge, which specializes in alcoholic ginger beer. What originally first started out as a personal project to create a craft beverage in their home in Panama, ended up becoming a new product and business venture here in Asheville. Sara first met Cristina a few years ago when they were first starting out, and even assisted with the kegging and first batches of Sarilla sparkling tea!

Ginger’s Revenge Brewery and Taproom can be found just down the road from UNCA, where visitors can enjoy the cozy vibes and variety of delicious ginger beers.

Debbie Word - The Chemist

Located in downtown Asheville, The Chemist was founded by Debbie Word, with the help of her own daughter, Danielle, who actually is a chemist! Together, the two were able to create their own gin, while using a variety of American botanicals. Although these women specialize in gin, they have also created other spirits as well, such as whiskey and liqueurs. Debbie has been able to expand her distillery and open a cocktail bar just next door, The Antidote.

Sara and Debbie recently met at Highland Brewing for a Pink Boots event for women in brewing, where they both bonded over their love of tea! Currently, the two are working together to create something special, where it will all be featured at a rooftop pop-up event at The Chemist/Antidote later this Summer.

Don’t forget to share some love to some of your favorite women, and make sure to keep an eye out for further dates and details about our upcoming summer pop-up event with The Chemist!
