What to Drink Instead of Soda: A Real-Ingredient Swap for Every Moment

Sarilla Tulsi Basil Lime tea spritzer can next to a glass of sparkling tea with a lime slice, surrounded by limes, basil, and flowers.

At Sarilla we believe the best drinks are the least processed ones: real tea, real herbs, real fruit. We also know why people reach for soda. It's not just thirst. It's the 3 p.m. slump, the end of the workday, the party, the pizza. A cold can with bubbles in it is a small moment of relief.

So let's not take that away. Let's change what's inside.

What Sarilla is, and isn't

Sarilla is real brewed organic tea, herbs, and fruit, lightly sparkling, in a 12 oz can. Most flavors have zero sugar and zero calories, and we never use artificial sweeteners. Instead, we use a touch of monk fruit juice, derived from the melon, and honeybush herb, which are naturally sweet with notes of honey and no calories.

Sarilla is not very sweet, on purpose. We're more zesty, earthy, and herbal than candy. We don't taste like cola, and we're not trying to. We want to be your next favorite.

Your 3 p.m. slump

You want something cold and crisp, with a lift. Try Organic Green Tea Spritzer, our best-selling flavor nationwide: organic green tea brewed with hibiscus flower, mellow and crushable, and high in l-theanine. Or try Organic Ginger Citrus, which is zesty, warming, and naturally caffeinated.

Dinner on the couch

Pizza, burgers, takeout: soda is there because bubbles and tang cut through rich food. Organic Tulsi Basil Lime is clean, earthy, and bright, with easy-to-digest tiny bubbles.

Hosting friends

Put a few cold cans in a bucket of ice, and everyone has something to hold and sip. Organic Hibiscus Mint is clean, fruity, and cooling, and pretty in a glass. Want everything? The Bestseller Sparkling Tea Set has one can of each of the 6 flavors.

The 5 p.m. reset

The workday is over, and you want a ritual. Pop a can and pour it over ice. Organic Chamomile Lime is our favorite evening flavor, caffeine-free, for relaxation and calm. If you want something lemony, Organic Lemon Tea Spritzer is our original flavor, inspired by silver needle white tea. It's our one flavor with sugar: 8 g and 30 calories per can.

Start with one swap

You don't have to quit soda overnight. Swap one soda a day for a week and see what you reach for next. We believe the less sweet and the more real your drink is, the more your taste moves toward real food.

Make it at home

We love a homemade drink too. Here are four ideas.

1. Cold brew your herbs. Put loose herbs or tea in a jar of cold water, leave it in the fridge overnight, and strain in the morning. No kettle needed. Try our Organic Herbal Resilience tea or Organic White Tea.

2. Set up a tea bar. Put out two or three cold brews, ice, sliced citrus, fresh mint, and a pitcher of sparkling water, with a few Sarilla cans for guests who want a ready-made one. Everyone builds their own.

3. Blend magnesium with hibiscus. Cold brew dried hibiscus until it's deep red, stir in your favorite magnesium powder, and top with sparkling water.

4. Use a fizzy water machine. A home carbonation machine turns filtered water into sparkling water in seconds. Pour it over your cold brew or fresh fruit, and you know every ingredient.

Most people won't do this every day, and that's fine. That's what the can is for.

What we leave out, and why

We don't use citric acid or "natural flavors" in Sarilla, and we read the label on every flavored water.

Natural flavors can be a mystery. "Natural flavor" is a legal term. The FDA defines it as flavoring constituents derived from sources like spices, fruit, or fruit juice (21 CFR 101.22). On a label it shows up as one line, so you can't see what is in it.

Flavors are a mark of ultra-processed food. Sarilla is Non-UPF Verified. In a UK study of 990 ultra-processed products, flavours were the most reliable marker of ultra-processing, found in 58.4% of them (Public Health Nutrition, 2023).

Flavored sparkling waters can be acidic. A 2007 lab study found all the flavoured sparkling waters it tested were acidic, with erosive potential similar to or greater than orange juice (Brown et al.). The American Dental Association's news site says plain sparkling water carries minimal erosion risk, while added flavors and citric acid can lower the pH (ADA News).

Our list is short: tea, herbs, fruit, filtered water, bubbles, and a touch of monk fruit in some flavors.
